A few years ago I studied in New York City and in my little 3-week journey I really feel like I got to know the city very well. New York is definitely one of those cities you dream about going to, there’s just so much to do, you could never get bored.
Seeing as you’ve come to this post I’m guessing you’re already going to NY or you’re thinking about it, and if you’re thinking about it, GO! You will not be disappointed.
I’ve put together a little list of all my fav things to do in the amazing New York City!
So first off I’m naming all of these “Touristy Things” all of the classic tourist things you have to in NYC!
Central Park – Such a classic, we hired bikes and went for what we thought would be a leisurely ride but it actually turned into an almost marathon! But don’t get me wrong it was a great way to see the park.
Empire State Building – Amazing view of the city, the views are breathtaking.
Rockefeller Centre (Top of the Rock) – Another amazing view of the city, I would recommend going to 1 of these buildings at night and the other during the day to get the most out of the views!
Grand Central Station – We went here on the very first day because we were so excited to see what it looked like in real life, then we ended up going there sooo many more times just to get around. It’s a massive station so prepare for a workout just swapping subways!
Times Square – This is another place you’ll probably end up seeing a bunch of times but it honestly never gets old. Make sure you see it in the daytime as well as at night as there are so many amazing lights and lit up billboards that can only be really seen while it’s dark. This is also an area where there are a loooot of people trying to make money, so make sure you prepare yourself to be approached multiple times and be aware of any scams.
Statue of Liberty – You can get a ferry over to liberty island to see the statue, you can also climb to the top but make sure you book early if you’d like to do it. We only found out you could do that once we were there and all of the time slots were booked out.
Coney Island & Luna Park – Catch the subway all the way down to coney island (it is a little bit of a journey but totally worth it), have a walk along the beach & even go swimming if it’s warm enough. Or for the thrill seekers, you have to go on some of the rides at Luna Park. Such an awesome atmosphere down on coney island, I loved it!
Museum of Natural History – or the “Night at the Museum Museum” I’m not really much of a museum person but I’m so glad we visited this one. The displays and stuffed animals are amazing. Not to mention you actually feel like you’re in the movie, most of the lighting is really dull so it feels like night time!
Flat Iron – This is such a weird building. I didn’t really know what to expect when we were going to see it, as I’d never actually seen a picture of it. Not an absolute necessity but it’s good to see if you’ve got the time.
9/11 Memorial – Prepare for some tears. The memorial out the front of the museum is devastating on its own, giant waterfalls down into the ground with every person’s name that died in this horrible attack. Going inside is even more confronting. I definitely recommend going it was a really good experience and really gave you the details of exactly what happened but maybe just prepare yourself a little beforehand.
Yankee Stadium – If you’re visiting during the baseball season definitely go and watch a game even if you’re not really that into baseball or sports, it’s still such fun and awesome experience.
Brooklyn Bridge – This is another great option for a bike ride! The view is amazing of this bridge and simply just crossing it will take your breath away. Hint if you walk down on the promenade on the Brooklyn side, it is an amazing place to watch the sunset and the New York skyline it is so famous for coming alive.
Where to Eat!
There would be endless lists and lists of amazing places to eat, but I’m going to give the few places that I went to and loved!
Bluestone Cafe – This is an Aussie run cafe with all Australian staff. It is the perfect place if you’re craving a classic Melbourne Brunch!
Bagel Cart – The Bagel cart out the front of our dorm rooms was my daily addiction. Cream cheese bagel and an iced coffee for $2.50 you literally can’t go wrong.
Gyro Cart – While we are on the topic of carts there was also a Gryo Cart out the front of our dorm and it was the best option for a super quick dinner and yummy too!
Ray’s Pizza – I think is a pizza chain. This was probably the best pizza I’ve had to date. One time I had a spaghetti pizza and I still crave it every day. So yumm!
Shake Shack – If you’re a burger lover you have to try this one, their burgers are insanely good. They have some amazing sauce on them that is like no other and don’t forget to try a concrete, they are amazing too, a sort of thick shake like substance.
Wholefoods – To us Aussies, this is a supermarket like no other. Every Australian I’ve ever spoken to about Wholefoods raves about it. I actually don’t really know how to describe it, we don’t have anything like it here.
Little Italy – This is just a little area that’s full of Italian places. Just have a look at the menus out the front and head any that sounds yummy.
Insomnia Cookies – if you’re a sweet tooth, you have to visit this cookie place. They are the best cookies I have ever tried, so warm and sticky, seriously heaven in a mouthful!
Other random things
A few other random fun places I just wanted to mention, that I think are really good places if you have the time for it!
Cupcake ATM – this is an ATM and gives you cupcakes. You can get cupcakes at any time of the day… wtf.. I still can’t believe it! This little pink wall definitely stands out in the street and there was a line when I went to get one. A line means it’s seriously good.
**Soooo my card is the wrong way here because I wanted to vlog me actually getting the cupcake then we took pictures later hahaha classic insta life..
LOVE sign – This is just a giant sign that says, love… That’s literally it! But it makes for a super cute insta photo!
Tiffany 5th Ave – This is the Tiffany Flagship store and it is out of this world. I think it was 6 levels of just Tiffany, I felt like royalty walking through this store.
DASH – If you’re a Kardashian follower then you cant go to New York and not see the DASH store. It’s actually super cute, and not as expensive as you would imagine, they had One Teaspoon pieces when I was there!
That is my long ass list of thing I think you should do and see in New York City! Hopefully, you have the best time visiting NY babes! x
PS I also vlogged my time in NY, watch them here!
